Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Student should learn how to use GPS technology to find a location and a digital camera to record it.
Set-up
- Teacher will pre place markers at five locations outside the school. Each destination needs to be a different type of “micro” environment. For example: forest, plains, water source, hills, …). If these are not available around the school, the teacher can set up each marker with the “micro” environment in mind. Teacher will teach students how to use GPS and camera.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will break into groups of 3 to 4. Each group will have a GPS unit, a digital camera, and a coordinate list.
- Students will use GPS to locate each coordinate group, create a waypoint at each location. Students will also take a digital picture at each location. The last GPS coordinate should lead them back to the classroom.
- Students will review the data collected and download digital photos. Students will add GPS coordinates to the properties of the photo.
- Students will describe each “micro” environment and what characteristics make it that environment.
