Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- How to record the following data using GPS device: material unearthed, coordinates, elevation, number of satellites, time.
- How to excavate object without harming them.
- Identify sites where coal or oil could potentially form in a few million years (not in their lifetime).
- Hopefully recognize that we must conserve nonrenewable resources.
Set-up
- Areas within the outdoor Learning Center’s pit must have buried plant material and animal bones in various locations.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will be with their lab table partners.
- Materials Manager will pass out goggles, shovels, and buckets.
- Data Recorder will be responsible for recording group’s data on sheet.
- Reader will read over assignment to group.
- M and M will mark and read out data from GPS device.
- All students will dig to find plant and animal bone locations.
- Captain Cleanup with clean shovels and buckets after the dig.
- After digging, all students will collaborate to determine where coal and oil would likely form and highlight those areas on data sheet.
