Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.

What do you want the students to learn?

  • Understand how different ways of observing affect scientists’ conclusions and reporting.

  • Identify examples of erosion in school environment.

  • How technology helps us see erosion on large scale.

Set-up

  • Students will take “erosion walk” on school properties to locate evidence of erosion.

  • The learner will write a description using great words. The learner will add a pencil drawing to the description. Finally, the student will take a picture using digital camera as evidence.

  • When students return to classroom, all information will be organized and discussed on how each method helped in studying erosion. Which do they think would give scientists the most accurate data?

As a follow up – Google Earth accessed –

·         display evidence in global arena of erosion (ex.:  Grand Canyon, Mississippi Delta, etc. –

·         discuss how GPS technology can aid in scientific studies.

What steps will the students take?

  •

Extra Activities?

  • Introduce GPS unit to student – have them work in groups and mark coordinates of different locations of erosion evidence.

  • Use route map to create map of schoolyard erosion.

  • Prepare map/report to present to school administration.
