Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.

What do you want the students to learn?

  • Students will learn that length of daylight hours is determined by position of Earth and the season.

Set-up

  • GPS
  • Computer with Google Earth
  • Graph paper
  • Colored pencils
  • List of city coordinates (predetermined by teacher to ensure spaced out over globe)

What steps will the students take?

  • Students will find names of cities on Google Earth from coordinates given to them by teacher.
  • Students will look up each city in the GPS to find the sunrise and sunset on the first day of each season.
  • Students will make a bar graph of the number of daylight hours and minutes for each city for each season.

Extra Activities?

  • Connect with another city (via email) that is in a very different part of the earth and share information about how daylight hour differences through the year affect their lives, activities, and the nature around them.
