Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- 4.11 – Test properties of soil.
Set-up
- Provide students with needed materials and tools to execute activity.
- Acquire permission from principal to take students out into the property surrounding the school building.
- Divide students into groups of four.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will go out of the school building and turn on the GPS.
- Each group will mark a spot where they will be collecting a soil sample.
- Set the mark on GPS and record data on a chart in their journal.
- They will dig or scoop soil sample and place in baggy after labeling baggy as to the location of sample.
- They will then move to a different location and repeat procedure.
- They will take samples from 4-5 different locations around school.
- Set their samples (baggies) next to each other and take a picture which will then be looked at later for further comparisons and investigations.
- Students can record color and texture of soil samples on the spot if time is available, but most likely these will be activities for a later day, and the pictures and soil samples will be useful for this.
